Chapter 24

Staying true to form, Josh steadfastly refused to admit any involvement with the cabin burglaries. He swore that he didn't know anything about them, that he had never been anywhere near the targeted cabins, and that he was innocent. His friend Perry, on the other hand, broke quickly when Weber showed them the can of spray paint Dan had found in the most recent vandalized cabin and said it would be a simple matter to dust it for fingerprints and compare any found on it with theirs.

"We did it," Perry said. "We broke into all of those cabins."

"Shut up, dickhead," Josh said, drawing a sharp look from his mother, which he ignored.

"Stick it," Perry replied. "This was all your idea anyway."

"I'm going to kick your ass," Josh vowed.

"Joshua!"

The boy gave his mother a hateful look and demanded, "Call Dad, I want him here."

"Your father's not going to get you out of this one," Marilyn said. "I've been telling you over and over that you need to straighten up, but you won't listen to me. So now you can take what you've got coming."

"Okay, Perry, how many cabins have you guys broken into?"

"Four or five, I can't remember. They were all real close to here."

"And how long has this been going on?"

"Ever since we got here, I guess. Almost two weeks."

"What all did you take?"

"We didn't take nothing, because we didn't do anything," Josh said.

Perry ignored him and shrugged his shoulders. "We didn't take much of anything, we just kind of trashed the places."

"Why would you do that? I thought we raised you better than that," Marilyn said to her son, but Josh ignored her and didn't respond.

"We did take some money we found in a couple of places," Perry said. "And some dirty magazines we found in the closet at one of the cabins. They're in the bedroom, under the bed. That's where the gun is, too."

"Gun? What gun?"

"A rifle," Perry told him. "I think we found it in the first or second cabin. It was in a closet with a box of bullets."

"Dan, do you remember a gun being listed in any of the burglary reports?"

Dan shook his head and said, "I'll call Mary and ask her."

"You boys brought a gun into this house? Are you crazy?"

"I keep telling you, Mom, we didn't do anything. At least I didn't. I don't know what Perry's been up to, but if there's anything here, he stole it and I don't know anything about it."

"Stop lying, Josh! You two are joined at the hip. If Perry was doing something, you were right there with him. And knowing you, it was probably your idea."

"Where's the bedroom these boys are using?"

"At the end of the hall on the left," Marilyn told him.

"Do you have any objection to me going back there and looking around?"

"No, I don't. And if there's a gun back there, please get it out of here."

"Keep an eye on these two, Dan," Weber said, and went down the hallway to the back of the cabin.
